cotrk fandom we really arent exploring the implications of paton having attended bloor’s academy enough… there’s just a generation of artists, actors, and musicians out there who went to school by candlelight in the 1970s and probably didnt even know why
#cotrk#also harold has to have hated him so much for this#paton yewbeam#children of the red king#ecdysing

I just realised that if Paton and Julia get married, Emma and Charlie share their aunt/uncle
And idk if it would be in character, but it would be very funny if Charlie referred to Julia as his aunt or Emma as his cousin or vice-versa, even if it it not true for so many reasons
#cotrk#Charlie bone#emma tolly#paton yewbeam#julia ingledew#I accidentally put Paton Ingledew first and...#...I wonder if they would#they totally should though

Be more like Paton Yewbeam. Have a crush on a delightful rare and ancient books shop owner. Only leave the house when it’s dark out, wearing sunglasses to avoid an Incident. Lock yourself in your room to mope and study history at the smallest inconvenience. Eat a solid block of cheese (by biting directly into it, no slicing) at one in the morning because you’re hungry and your weird great nephew is getting cryptic warnings from cats (again).

Rereading (and of course live blogging) the series. If you don't wanna see this but don't wanna block me, I'll tag my liveblog posts with #dag liveblogs charlie bone.
In addition to parts I have Comments about, I'll also be noting every time a character's appearance is described. So far we have Charlie and Grandma Bone.
Wait he doesn't turn 11. He TURNS 10??? He starts the series as a 9 year old??? We need a Benjamin Brown Protection Squad.
Grandma Bone description. Also, I feel like the whole "after midnight magic" angle would have been cool to explore. WHY does it work better after midnight? When does it stop being "after midnight"? ARE endowments enhanced after midnight? Etc
We need a Benjamin Brown Protection Squad.
Descriptions.
And, since I'll be going in chapters, that's all for this post.
#charlie bone#grandma bone#benjamin brown#manfred bloor#paton yewbeam#dag liveblogs charlie bone#JUST to be clear. don't call me Dag. that's not my nickname#I just don't wanna use ''charlie bone liveblog'' tag bc idk#someone else might use it one day#none at the moment but maybe one day

my stars i've just found a community of people revolving around a book series i've read since i was a kid. Charlie Bone books seemed to never quite catch on, but it was my Harry Potter growing up and to know i'm not the only one only makes me happier.

The Yewbeams are so fucked up, abusive and controlling as a family, you have to feel sad for Paton and Lyell.
Paton’s “keep your head down” approach and grumpy and depressed mood at the start of the main series is most likely an affect of trauma, not just caused by his endowment but also his family, his mother’s death and corruption of his sisters at the hands of Yolanda. Plus the years going to Bloors and later having to associate with his awful sisters (because they are family). Can you really blame him for keeping his head down for so many years? I mean, it definitely wasn’t the most moral choice, but considering his history, it’s very understandable.
Lyell may seem well-adjusted, but he has to be more affected by his upbringing than we see in the books. While Paton grew up with one good influence (his father), Lyell didn’t really have any truly good influence or support. His dad died when he was a baby, and he was raised by a corrupt and awful mother. Even if Grizelda was not horribly abusive like she was to Charlie, she wouldn’t have given Lyell the emotional support he needed when he was growing up. Also Yolanda tried to “keep him at Yewbeam Castle” before they discovered he was unendowed... That had to fuck him up a bit. It’s not surprising that he has “chronic hero syndrome” as an adult and attempts to defy the Bloors.

Jenny Nimmo was always vague on the details in the Charlie Bone books so I’m going to operate under the assumption that Paton Yewbeam wears sweatpants bc I can
All we really know is that he hastily sends back ill-fitted clothes but sweats are forgiving and comfortable and this loser (affectionate) hides in his room not writing all day

I’m so torn on what Harold Bloor’s doctorate is actually in because like. The rancid vibes say business administration but my desire for him and Paton to have the most unhinged beef imaginable says history.
#it’s sure as hell not education related#partially because i think thats funny but mostly because harold would know he didnt need it#so he wouldnt waste his time on getting a degree that didnt serve him in any way#whereas business would actually be useful since he is handling the business aspects of the family#and history would be useful because fuck paton yewbeam specifically#(the schoolage drama i have for them is unhinged)#harold bloor#paton yewbeam#cotrk#cotrk headcanons#ecdysing

My collection of Paton Yewbeam sketches also from my other account ft Charlie as ultimate wingman. I find Paton the most difficult to draw consistently, probably because how I imagine him always changes.

Just thinking about how no one in Paton’s family acomidated his Endowment. How no one thought to help him to control it better, or to keep their home accessible to him. How kids like Tancred with uncontrollable Endowments got guidance of help from friends and/or family to live and control their powers, but Paton was just isolated to his room in darkness instead. Thinking about how he only started to go outside or participate in life in his 40s because that’s the first time in his life he tried to find tricks to control his powers.
Thinking about how Julia Ingledew would absolutely have candles and non-electric lighting in their home for him. How she would help him find tricks to control his power. How she would work with him to ensure he got to live the life he wanted. How he would finally find the kind of unconditional love he deserved.

I have been on the Bartholomew Bloor Hate Train for years god he is the worst. He has zero room to judge Paton here but more than that Bart is acting like he really knows Paton which there is no way he does. He leaves his own family when Harold is 7 (thus Paton only 5 and his endowment not even known yet), and he and Lyell only know each other for like a year before Lyell’s disappearance and then he’s gone from the city again- no mention of interacting with Paton at all. So what the hell is he basing his ideas of Paton off of? A small child from four decades ago who had not yet had a reason to stand up to his family? Did he just perceive adult Paton never being present and visible when he was hanging out with Lyell as negatively as he took child Harold not liking picnics? Or is it that he blamed a grieving Paton, who genuinely believed his nephew and only friend was dead, for not doing enough when he himself did nothing but leave?
Tbh I think the best explanation for why Bart acts like this towards Paton is that he hates himself for not proactively dealing with his family’s shit, but he is still fundamentally A Bloor and so his hatred and insecurities are always turned on someone else. Anyone else would call him on this or on how unfounded his accusations are (he’s been gone from this city for most of the lives of even the adults, he doesn’t really know any of them) but since Paton has those same insecurities he just accepts it. Since Bart is basically just saying the same stuff Paton says to himself already, Paton doesn’t think to question whether Bart has any room to be judging him.
Charlie does though because if there is one thing Charlie is good at it’s seeing through the Bloors.
I took Bartholomew so much more seriously as a kid than I do as an adult.
PC Singh had just opened his mouth when a voice from the ground said, ‘Good Lord, Paton Yewbeam.’
Paton peered down at the man on the ground. ‘Bartholomew?’ he said in disbelief.
‘It’s not like you to stick your neck out,’ Bartholomew grunted, as Paton helped him to his feet. ‘I’ve changed,’ said Paton gruffly.
–
When the two men were alone, Bartholomew asked, ‘What made you change, Paton? You were always such a ninny.’
Paton winced. ‘The boy,’ he said simply. ‘I had to help him.’
‘Ah, Charlie.’ Bartholomew smiled at last. ‘His father was the best and bravest man I ever knew. You were a poor friend to him, Paton.’
That dig would be completely warranted coming from literally anyone else in the series, but THE GUY WHO FUCKED OFF TO GO BACKPACKING AROUND THE WORLD, LEARNED HIS WIFE DIED WHEN HE WAS GONE, AND THEN DECIDED NOT TO BOTHER COMING BACK HOME TO RAISE THEIR ONLY CHILD BECAUSE ‘Well, it sounds like he’d probably be happier living with my nightmare of a father, and it’s not like the kid and I had anything in common anyway’ IS IN NO POSITION TO BE JUDGING ANYBODY ELSE’S FAMILIAL FAILURES YOU HYPOCRITE.
#cotrk#bartholomew bloor#paton yewbeam#charlie bone#lyell bone#god. bart is truly such a fucking loser#im so obsessed with the adults in this series because they all are so weird and pathetic and suck so much
